Story 039: The Ice Warriors

Original air dates November and December 1967. Only two missing episodes. The Doctor and companions leave the cold Himalays and go to an even colder planet. Poor Jaimie’s knees may be blue forever.

Some base with scientific consoles has announcements of evacuation notice. The leader denies evacuation and demands the fix the system. One of the consoles looks almost modern with a screen and keyboard, but I think it’s an accident.

The voice of the computer is hard to understand.

Oh look, they have wrist-communicators! And have found something frozen in the ice. They’re going to delay to dig it out because they’re curious scientists. A mastadon? A man? They don’tknow yet!

The base isn’t doing well at keeping the thing it’s running up.

My, the incidental music is very 60’s. So are the costumes; the women are in short bodysuits, the men in longer ones, with swirly patterns. Jaimie comments on them and Victoria is Not Amused.

The TARDIS appears sideways and upside-down, which must be quite a shock. The doors open out this time, which is unusual too. Our heroes clamber out. They find a huge plastic dome, probably covering the base we’ve been watching. They find an airlock-like door and go in.

It’s definitely a man in the ice, and they’re hauling it back despite the delays.

They find a Victorian hallway, where they are issued badges for evacuation flight seven, as scavengers. They go into the control center and immediately the Doctor gets involved against the boss’ intentions, to stabilize things and give them more than two minutes to live.

A “giant” among prehistoric men, wearing some kind of armor. The men outside work to get in with their prize before the weather closes in. A couple of scavengers watch. Avalanche! One of the scientists is lost. The scavengers try to help them despite not liking the scientists.

The Doctor takes a test to prove he’s useful and not a scavenger. Advances led to less growing due to artificial food. Less growing meant less CO2 meant less greenhouse effect, led to an ice age which they are fighting off with technological tricks.

The frozen body arrives, and is confusing. The Doctor finds an impossible electronic connection, and rushes off. The body melts, and starts to move, highly improbably.

Time for reconstructions!

Jamie is clubbed to the ground and Victoria abducted by the warrior, who’s gotten up and is rather lively now.

The Doctor deduces the helment is a spacesuit. This means there’s a spaceship, possibly with an atomic power plant which could react badly to the Ionizer thing.

The Ice Warrior interrogates Victoria, explains they crashed and then were looking out when they were buried in an avalance. Victoria is not good at answering his questions. He wants Victoria to take him to the thing that revived him.

The Ice Warrior has a huge ass.

They dig out four more warriors and Varga, the active one wakes them up with power packs from the base. Once they’re all awake, they’ll dig out their ship and go back to the Red Planet.

Jaimie and Arden head back to the glacier with better equipment.

Varga and the warriors blast a cave into the solid ice.

Miss Garrett finds the old scientist’s notes and gives them to the Doctor who likes them and understands. The Omega Factor, whatever that is.

This is one of the better reconstructions.

Warriors blast Jaimie and Arden. Arden is probably dead, Jaimie is out cold. Varga’s warriors drag a distraight Victoria into the ship. Victoria escapes, tries to call for help. Gets help. Does not tell them about the engines. Runs away from warriors.

Doctor gets some ammonium sulfide and goes to investigate the propulsion unit. He takes a radio.

VIctoria is quite the screamer.

Jaimie comes to, struggles, and turns out to be paralyzed. Hopefully he’ll get better.

The Warriors don’t want the ice melted or they’ll be flooded. They plan on stopping the scientists with guns.

Victoria’s part buried in an avalanche, and stuck. Hopefully the Doctor or the scavenger guy will find her. The scavenger’s rough around the edges but okay.

Doctor finds scientist and goes to get Jaimie. Scavenger goes for Victoria. More avalanches.

Warriors capture Victoria and scavenger. They kill the scavenger.

Running around. Aliens threaten the base, need fuel for the ship. The base needs the fuel for the ionizer.

The base shoos the aliens out by turning up the heat.

The base has to decide – ionize or not. The computer says no. Do they break the rules and decide on their own, or let the computer kill them all.

They pick ionizing, and melt the glacier and the alien ship. The doctor and crew leave amidst the confusion.
