Story 033: The Moonbase

Original air dates February – March 1967. Another half-missing serial with slideshows to fill in the gaps. Out of control, the TARDIS goes … to the moon!

All the slides for the slide show are overxposed and hard to see. Such a joy to watch.

Wardrobe contains spacesuits! How amazing, I don’t recall a time they went out when it wasn’t okay to go out. I wish these suits were visible in the snaps, they’re terrible.

Is there normal gravity inside the TARDIS? I assume so. They bounce around the Moon, including cheesy 60’s sound effects.

Strange disease on the Moon base! Ther doctor is sick, and someone else has come down with it. Wanting help from Earth.

The Moon base people are a little surprised to see visitors, but take it pretty well. They’re more worried about their current personell problems than the strangers. The Doctor announces he’s a Doctor and they’re happy to see him. They’re in 2070.

The Doctor doesn’t like the look of the disease, and sends the others off to help while he thinks about it. Ben goes to help, finds Ralph, who’s nervous, but takes the offered help. Ralph is zapped somehow sort of that was hard to see. Ben is surprised Ralph has gone.

Back in the infirmary, one of the men wakes up. Polly and the Doctor rush in. The man rambles, but makes no sense, then dies. People run around reporting all the things to each other.

Polly screams, seeing a figure moving away, through a door. Everyone checks, finds nothing.

There’s a slideshow with a cyberman in it. Then credits.

Video starts! We have a serial with video!

A cyberman stalks the infirmary and absconds with one of the patients. Polly sees it and screams again.

The leader of the Moonbase dosen’t like them and wants them to head out. The Doctor wants to fix it, and the leader gives him one earth day.

“I took a degree once in Glasgow, 1888, I think,” Reassuring, Doctor.

I just noticed that the Moonbase uniform consists of slacks and T-shirts with a thing pinned to them. Cheap costumes.

Excitement with weather on Earth as the station does what it’s supposed to do – except it isn’t working.

Oh, it was a cyberman who zapped Ralph! It’s zapped Polly and Jaimie now, and absconded with the last crew member from the infirmary.

Oh, wow, their spacesuits are cheesy! Clear plastic overalls with a bottle strapped to their back and big bubble helmets.

Two men, outside to fix an antenna, are accosted by Cybermen. They’re running out of personnell.

The disease I couldn’t see is a set of black veiny things over the hands and face. It’s both cheesy and creepy.

The Doctor has found something in the station’s sugar supply, and thinks it’s the Cybermen. They find one hiding in the infirmary. It leaps up and challenges them as the credits roll…

Back to slideshowvania!

Things… are happening. Grating voices about operational systems two and three.

The missing men are “altered” somehow. To be converted, probably to Cybermen, as that’s their thing.

Polly figures out that nail polish remover might hurt the Cybermen, good old Acetone. Maybe the base has a gallon or two of it. I have a quart here in the garage.

Oh, they’re going to mix up all the solvents they have and probably kill themselves. Or not, because TV show.

The Cybermen are using the “converted” crew to use the Gravitron beam to try and destroy the world. Neat.

The crew of the TARDIS makes a solvent cocktail and loads it into the old-style fire extinguishers to spray on them. They go to pounce on the Cybermen with chemistry.

Thumping and bumping, slideshow. Staff tries to get things stabilized again. Cybermen prepare to invade having failed at the control. Discordant music and cuts between two incomprehensible scenes. A Cyberman outside in vacuum.

The crew goes on lockdown, other things happen. Hard to see. Suspensful music as something gets closer. Science fictiony noises. Cybermen walk out of darkness. Two, no, three incomprensible pictures! Dramatic music! Credits roll! Something must have happened!

Okay, standoff. Earth is sending help. All they have to do is outwait the Cybermen. The Cybermen use the infected crewmember in the infirmary to take over. They deflect the rescue ship and interrupt things badly. Our characters figure out what’s happened and go to blocade the infirmary.

The Cybermen bring more troops. They’re pushed off the moon with the Graviton. And the day is saved!
