Story 075: Robot

Original air dates December 1974 through January 1975. First episode with Tom Baker. Off a blu-ray disc with incredibly long trailers.

The Brigadier sees this happen. Calls medical for the Doctor. Things seem quiet. Elsewhere, something sneaks onto a base.

The new Doctor has snuck out of his bed – this is a habit I see – and heads for the lab. He’s happy to see the TARDIS, but unhappy not to have a key, which is in his boot, again. He’s about to flee when they get him curious and it all comes back to him, and he’s suddenly interested.

Another robbery by the mysterious roboty thing.

Now the robot has a mole machine, and the Doctor has called it, the smug bastard. The last bit stolen.

Robot finds Sarah Jane snooping around, asks, ‘Who are you? Why are you here?” and stomps twoards her. It’s Marvin’s bad natured cousin. Credits roll.

The director has activated the robot to scare Sarah. Oh, look, it’s a Three Laws robot, sort of.

Later, the robot comes to his creator asking for help, as he’s been given conflicting orders. The Professor calls the Doctor for help, when Think Tank shows up to talk to him. The Doctor has driven off in Bessie.

The Robot is at the Professor’s house, left to destroy the Doctor. The Doctor tries to outwit the robot, and is failing when the credits roll.

UNIT shows up in time to confound the robot and rescue Sarah and the Doctor with many bullets and almost no effect on the robot.

Sarah and Professor break into the science boffins meeting. Turns out the Professor is working with them, and knew about the plan. UNIT shows up just as things get hairy and Ms. Smith is taken as a hostage. The Robot follows.

Look, Checkov’s phone booth!

UNIT traps the boffins in a bunker, which they built in the cold war as an atomic shelter. It’s pretty durable, and has machine gun nests. The robot, armed with disentegrator ray, goes out to defend it until their doomsday plan can be put in to action. Credits roll.

Robot pauses, and tells them to go, not destroying them, but saying it will. It disintegrates the Professor. The Robot goes insane at this destruction. The doctor stops the launch just in time.

The crazed Robot has decided to destroy all of humanity. The Doctor reasons this out and tries to get a warning out. The failsafe stops them. The robot goes outside to kill everyone individually, and the Brigadier shoots it with the disintegrator, which causes it to grow.

The robot picks up Sarah and puts her on a roof – very Faye Wray – and UNIT shoots pointlessly at it. UNIT finally falls back.

The Doctor arrives with some of the Professor’s metal virus and splashes it on the robot, which begins to shrink, and is probably no longer impervious to bullets. It falls down, dying. Dead, it looks like a defeated Clockwork boss. It even fades away to nothing.

Here’s the jelly babies.

Sarah goes with him, and the UNIT Doctor is talked into going with them, and the TARDIS fades out as the Brigadier enters. The Brigadier takes it with grace and aplomb, and simply schedules around them.
