Story 069: The Green Death

Original air dates May through June of 1973. Not Ranier Ale.

Men in a mine of some sort, an overhead shot from a crane or helicopter. Be a drone shot today, but very high tech.

Man drives up to entrance, where there’s a crowd. Most of them are happy at the news of new work, but there’s an ecologist there who’s against the work.

The whistle blows, as the man who’s come up reaches it and pulls it. He’s glowing, and dead.

The Doctor really wants to go to Metabelius Three, but Jo’s incensed over the oil drilling and wants to go help Dr. Jones. She and the Brigadier go out to South Wales in his lovely Mercedes soft top. They’re at a place I can’t pronounce or spell. Very Welsh.

The Doctor arrives where he wanted to go, whereupon he is immediately attacked by a tentacley thing. Blue lights and blue snakes.

Jo finds Professor Jones, and gets off on the wrong foot. He finally introduces himself.

The Doctor misses a phone call while searching for blue sapphires.

The mine must be investigated, whereas the chemical guy wants it sealed. Sends a minion off with the directions, “Nobody must go down the mine.” Somehing is off about him. Ooo, he has fancy headphones.

The Doctor arrives and see the lift in action, orders it stopped. It won’t stop. Credits roll over the falling doom!

They stop the lift in the nick of time, and climb down a rope the last twenty feet. They find the dying miner.

The voice on the headphones wants someone “processed”so they’ll do as he says. He is processed and stalls UNIT and the Brigadier.

The Professor Jones and the Doctor break in to steal the welding equipment. He is caught, and the shed revealed to be empty.

They find a serendipitous cutting torch, and get the cage moving. Doctor finds Jo and Bert have left. Jo and Bert find glowing stuff, and it’s a nasty chemical. Bert’s turning green, probably dying. Jo goes on.

Jo finds squiggly mutant larvae things. Doctor finds her, sees them. They flee. Big larvae break out of the wall to menace them and their credits.

They find a mine cart to row through the maggots in. Icky.

The Doctor and Jo head out through a crack.

Brigadier and the head of Global Chemicals go head to head, and the Brig loses. Badly.

I’ve skipped a whole thing with the mind control machine.

Jo’s sad because Bert’s gone. Professor Jones is nice to her about it.

Larvae thing breaks out of the Doctor’s scavenged egg, and crawls around ickily. Credits.

The chauffer who’d gone after the egg and gets bitten, probably to die.

The Brigadier blows the mine. And Stay Out to the Doctor.

Maggoty things break out of the ground all around, bite and will kill people.

Doctor wants oil waste from Global Chemicals. He sneaks in as the milkman. Gets caught. Hides as the washerlady. Second time we’ve seen the doctor in drag.

Jo goes to get a maggot. Pity the RAF is going to bomb them.

Doctor sonics his way into a secret elevator. Meets the boss-man – the computer, as credits roll. Derp!

Doctor plays a logic game with the computer to break its logic.

Doctor put into the headphones of doom, ineffective on the time lord.

Jo is surrounded by maggots and Professor Jones is out cold. Doctor and Sgt. Benton rescue them.

Prof is delierious and tries to give the Doctor the clue about the cure to the green stuff, but can’t speak it out.

They have a breakthrough and find the prof’s fungus kills the larvae. They go poision the slag heap. There’s one flying one to deal with. Which they do.

The computer gets giddy as they get closer to Takeover. The Doctor fights the machine with his blue sapphire and breaks the mind control. Stevens breaks the computer and overloads the generators, blowing it all to Kingdom Come. Big boom.

Meanwhile, the Professor is healing. Jo is leaving with the Professor Jones to go to Africa, and to marry Jo. The Doctor drives Bessie away from the party, into the night and the credits.
