Story 064: The Time Monster

Original air dates May through June of 1972, in six parts. Watched the extras already and Katy Manning is a delight. Opens with stock footage of a volcano, again. And Earthquakes. And The Master.

The Master leaves a crystal in a lab with a couple of assistants.

Jo drops a hint from the paper that this is Atlantis, and suddenly the Doctor is interested.

The Master is being called before the head administrator, who’s found out his credentials are fake, so the Master puts the whammy on him a good one.

The lab assistants try a trial run, which causes some wierdness with Time. The Master is not amused. He rants, but aplogizes.

UNIT and the other VIPs arrive, finding the window-washer lying on the ground.

The Doctor, Jo, and Bessie head out to track the time sensor. They use a “super drive” to get to the demonstration in time, via sped up film.

The demonstration runs, and a cup and saucer vanish to not reappear in the other room. The Master calls, “Come, Kronos, come!” and we get the first credits.

Time warps and slows again. The Doctor runs in, passing the Master who’s hiding outside. The young lab assistant is aged. He spits out “Kronos” as a warning.

The Master has shown up at the administrator’s office like he owns the place.

Experiments and phone calls.

The old man lab assistant wakes up, tries to explain what happened.

Benton gets the Master once by sneaking back in the windows, but gets sucker-punched a moment later.

Cut between Master doing something with the crystal and the Atlantean doing something with the crystal. The priest appears in the machine. And credits roll.

Faceoff between Atlantean priest and The Master. They try and sommon Kronos.

Kronos comes. I wish I could actually see him instead of the flappy white thing he looked like.

The Doctor darts in and rescues the others from the time field. The Master puts Kronos into the crystal.

All these Atlantaens chew the scenery magnificently.

The Master has a video watch! Eat that, Dick Tracy!

Oh, here’s the knight charging the trucks. Saw in an extra that the stunt man was hurt.

They need the TARDIS, which the Master has delayed arriving. He continues to delay them while the Doctor and Brigadier arrive. Yates gets bombed by a WW2 bomber, the Brigader calling desperately into his radio, “Mike, can you hear me?!” and the credits roll.

There was a bomb, which wrecks the truck, dumps the TARDIS on the ground, and they have to right it.

The Master’s TARDIS time rotor looks like a chocolate fountain.

First desktop change for the TARDIS. Round lamps on the walls. Somehow 70’s IKEA.

First reference to a living TARDIS.

The Doctor has parked his TARDIS in the Master’s TARDIS, and the Master’s TARDIS is inside the Doctor’s, which means they’re in a loop.

Benton sneaks up on the Master twice in one day.

Oh, the wrong button gets me commentary tracks!

The boffins are trying to untangle the time stream, and it fails. Sgt Benton is turned into a baby.

Doctor and Master face off. Kronos eats the Doctor. The Master dumps the Doctor’s TARDIS into the time stream, I think. The credits rolled.

The Doctor’s TARDIS helps Jo get the Doctor back. Handy, that. The Master arrives in Atlantis, in his TARDIS. The mainframe computer is rather out of place.

Speechification going on. Kronos is bad, don’t want him back.

The police box appears next to the Master’s TARDIS, and they’re met with guards and an order to kill them. They’re saved by the high priest.

Master puts the whammy on the King of Atlantis, or tries, but it doesn’t work.

I haven’t figured out who the redhead with all the cleavage is. Maybe she’s the Queen.

None of these men have any chest hair.

The Doctor talks to the King and tries to help find a solution other than Kronos. The Queen cozies up to the Master. He has a silver tounge.

All these men who wear gloves! How old-fashioned.

Last Episode starts.

The Doctor and Master are after the Crystal of Kronos. They have found it and had to defeat the Minotaur, and it gives them the Crystal, which is taken by the Master.

Captured, Doctor and Jo have time for a long winded story.

Master is King of Atlantis.

Kronos is released goes on rampages. Then there’s a TARDIS chase. The Doctor does a time ram thing and explodes both TARDISes. The Doctor hesitates so Jo pushes the button.

They meet Kronos, who has a conversation with them. Frees the Master from eternal torture, and then goes home. The science boffins fix the gap in time all on their own. Credits roll over happiness.
