Story 063: The Mutants

Original air dates April through May of 1972 in six parts.

Three futuristic soldiers chase a local mutant man, who runs from them. They kill him and report finding him dead.

The Doctor is noodling along in his shop when a black sphere arrives, a message he must deliver. He and Jo hop into the TARDIS to deliver it.

They show up on a space station with two groups of people; high tech Overlords, and some warriors.

The Doctor sees a mutant killed, and is taken to “reception”.

Two Overlords discuss things, revealing to us that Earth is leaving the planet Solos. Some 500 years ago, the Earthmen arrived on Solos, made a treaty. After 500 years of aid, blah, blah, blah, freedom.

One of the Solnians causes a disruption and is chased out. The Doctor’s magic box opens for him, so the Doctor joins the chase to get it to him. The Solnian grabs Jo and heads for a teleporter, with troops firing on it as the credits roll.

Jo and the Solnian who’s name I’ve lost get to the planet, which is covered in a toxic mist. Joe will need a mask. The soldiers chase them. Solnian grabs a mask from a soldier, keeps on running with Jo, carrying her.

The Doctor gets a clue from one of the guards that Jo’s still missing and he’s being used. He plans an escape. The Solnian he was helping escape descides to kill him instead. The credits roll.

Doctor and whatshis name escape to Solna.

They find Kai and Jo and fight off a bunch of mutants. The mutants don’t like fire. Jo runs away does not see the Doctor. Finds a glowy thing. Jo falls. Man in radiation suit comes out of the glowy to save her.

Kai and Doctor look for Jo.

The Marshall has a plan to kill them all.

Varun escapes.

Doctor and Kai find Jo, and the two friendly guards find them. Hearing this, the Marshall gasses them and then blows up the entrances. They’re sealed in, trapped! CREDITS!

The silvery figure Jo saw leads them out, to his hideout. It’s Professor Sondegard, the missing man, who can read the tablets. They split up to let the doctor and professor read them.

Escaping in tunnels. Fighting off guards.

Montage of figuring out the tablets. Realization: Radiation! They know where that is, and go there. They struggle to the heart of it. The Doctor reaches the glowing thing. It’s a rock.

The cave gave them a crystal, and the Doctor figures out that the Solnian season is 500 years long, and that the mutations are a normal part of their cycle.

Onboard skybase, the rebels get in a firefight and bust out a wall. Depressurization happens. Credits roll.

They’re captured by the Marshall, and put in front of a firing squad. The professor comes in and interrupts. They go off to capture the Doctor. They chase him, and capture him.

Ooo, fancy a spaceshippy thing!

Jo breaks free and frees the others. Poor sucker of a guard.

Everyone gets recaptured. Skybase beams the planet surface to normal. The investigator’s shuttle lands, and Jo, Kai, and the remaining good guard are bottled up in the radiation room, which will be deadly when they refuel the shuttle. Credits roll.

The Doctor is forced to support the Marshall by Jo being a prisoner. Jo escapes with the other two in the nick of time.

Professor Sondegard makes his way up to Skybase, with mutants in tow.

Prisoners are put in the radiation room to motivate the Doctor. The native mutates, with Sondberg’s crystal, into the higher form. Kai fades away, then zooms off, freeing people. He shows up to zap the Marshall.

They rush off to the TARDIS to make good their escape.
