Story 054: Inferno

Original air dates May through June of 1970. Another long seven-parter. Must have something to do with a fire.

More footage of volcanos. Much more impressive in color.

There’s a boss-man who’s an asshole. This is a trend.

Maintenance is called to fix a leaky pipe. There’s green goo that gets on him, leaving him a bit zombified. He staggers across the field and then falls. Another man rushes over to help him and gets beaten to death.

An oilman from oil rigs is brought in to oversee drilling. The boss-man is a jerk to him, too.

The Doctor has a garage door opener, how amazing. He’s borrowing power for his own experiments, with the TARDIS console. I’ve seen this one before, I think. Must be close to thirty years ago.

Our technician is turning into a werewolf.

Doctor tries the TARDIS console, and it fades away to nothing, through a twisty mess of visual effects. He come back to an alert from the drill head.

They find the werewolf and another dead man at the reacator, and some credits roll.

The werewolf at the reactor was stopped by UNIT and the reactor set to normal. Crisis averted, althrough there’s a dead man and a very hot werewolf.

Private Wyatt and the scientist turn into werewolves and run away.

The Brigadier pulls the Professor and Sir Kevin into his office to discuss the three dead men. Nothing gets done.

The computer is complaining that drilling should stop and it’s being ignored.

The professor touches a sample of stuff and starts to turn into a werewolf. He steals some sort of componenent from equipment. As he is to destroy it, the Doctor stops him. The Doctor tries to show the Brigadier, but fails, and is all but thrown out.

The Doctor steals some power and tries another run of the console, which fades away, taking he and Bessie with it. Credits roll.

Professor whiny-ass disconnects the Doctor’s power in the middle of it. They can’t get it back. Stallman hides his werewolfy hands with gloves.

The Doctor comes to in his hut, but the contents are different, and there is a “Unity is Strength” poster on the wall. His garage door opener is missing. He leaves, to be shot at by troops. Alarms blare. The Doctor runs. He finds scientist werewolf. Fights him off with Chekov’s Fire Extinguisher. Private Werewolf turns up. The troops shoot it.

The Doctor sees a dark-haired Liz in a uniform, confronts her, and is arrested.

The Brigade Leader – Lethbridge Stewart – does not take this lightly. He gets blamed for the damage to the computer as he knows too much.

This Professor Stallman is also turning into a werewolf.

I cannot tell what kind of pen the Brigade Leader is using.

Pressure from vent pipe #2 goes too high alarms and excursions. Heavy handed ones. The Doctor tries to sneak in an fix the computer but is caught. Credits roll.

The Doctor fixes the computer, and gives them a plan that will stop it from self-destructing. They contunie to disbelieve his story. Interrogation is unproductive.

The Doctor warns them that they shouldn’t break through the crust, that it will release forces they cannot comprehend. He is ignored as the credits roll.

Zero is hit, and things get explody. Werewolves come out and start heading to the drill head. Again, a fire extinguisher is effective.

Doctor predicts destruction of the Earth from the hole. Lots of teeth gnashing about help not coming.

Doctor convinces them to let him go back and save the other world, but they’re distracted by werewolves. Distracted for two episodes.
