Original air dates April through June of 1969. Our group materializes into the middle of what appears to be World War 1. They’re picked up by an ambulance driver.
The civilians are sent to the General for interrogation. The General has a secret videophone, asking or warning about 5,000 specimens. He also has some mesmerism power he can flummox people with, using his glasses as a prop.
The Doctor, Jaimie, and Zoe are brought up to a Court Martialed for espionage and desertion. They’re not given a chance to speak sensibly. The General uses his glasses-mojo to convince the other officers they’re guilty. Zoe to prison, Jaimie to prision for desertion, and the Doctor to execution tomorrow at dawn.
Zoe finds the General’s video screen, knows it’s anachronistic. She also finds the keys to the cell and steals them and then off to rescue the Doctor. She gets to him in time for them to come get him for the firing squad. He looks very small against the post. Credits roll over the final shot.
The shot is a sniper who’s shooting the firing squad. The Doctor and Zoe leg it.
The General is “leaving for the conference now” in a wooden box that appears and makes a TARDIS-like noise, without the grinding.
Some of the soldiers start putting their memory loss together and noticing some mist. They wonder if it’s a new gas the Germans have deployed.
The Doctor et al show the video screen to the ambulance driver and lieutennant. The video screen is on and the general sees them looking at him. He comes back in his box to capture everything, and stop the escapees. With artillery.
They drive through a mist, which stops the leutennant and ambulance driver cold. The Doctor drives. They come through into the Romans some two thousand years ago and are attacked as the credits roll.
They start the ambulance and back away through the mist, fading off to nothing, and reappearing in WW1.
The Doctor figures out it’s time travel and wants maps of all the affected areas so they go back to the General’s office. They get a map, which has a blank space in the middle.
They get picked up by the Germans, who think they are spies. They try and explain, and only the Sonic Screwdriver convinces them. The German general also has an eyepeice that befuddles people and a video screen of his own.
They get routed to the American Civil War, and have to fight their way out. The 1917 Leutennant is a better shot than the Civil War guys. The Lieutennant is left behind defending them. The ambulance drives on, until it runs out of petrol. The Lieutennant is captured by the North.
The crew is crashing the night in a barn when there’s a teleport noise and a box appears to disgorge civil war soldiers. Doctor and Zoe go in to check it out, leaving Lady Jennifer (the ambulance driver) and Jaimie to face the credits. They’re captured by the South.
Zoe and the Doctor poke around in the machine and find soldiers queued up, of each sort. The box drops off more soldiers in the Roman times. The Doctor has a hunch who’s box it is.
The box lands at its central base and The Doctor and Zoe snoop around. They find a training school or univeristy and are sent to a lecture which explains the failures in processing of the soldiers from different locations. Much plot is revealed.
The Doctor and the War Chief see each other and immediatly react, the Doctor with, “Run, Zoe!” and the War Chief with, “Stop them!” Kerfuffle ensues.
Zoe is captured and interrogated with a machine. They don’t like her answers and interpret them badly.
Doctor frees Zoe, runs away to gather reinforcements.
Introduction of the “Time Lords”.
The guards, in black rubbery suits, look like Tick villians.
The Doctor knows the War Chief, and the War Chief knows the Doctor.
The War Chief says he is in it for peace; the aliens want to take over the galaxy. All this war is to point the violence of humans at something useful. The War Chief tells the Doctor that he will rule and let the Doctor help him.
All the reistance have gathered in the American Revolution, and are going to mass attack the aliens’ HQ.
The Doctor is forced to lure a small group of all the resistance leaders to the alien HQ.
I lost a lot, enraptured by the show. The Doctor has to call the Time Lords to get everyone home, and flees them himself. Jaimie and Zoe, faithful to the last, go with him. They make it to the TARDIS in the nick of time, but cannot escape.
On the world of the Time Lords, there is a trial for the War Lord. The War Lord is taken out of time, as if he never existed, and his entire world put in a force field to keep them contained.
The trial of The Doctor is short. The Doctor shows them what he’s been fighting. He’s awaiting the results of his trial. The Companions want to see him, and get to. They talk him in to trying to flee again. Off they run, only to be stopped at the TARDIS.
The Doctor tells them goodbye, and the Time Lords send them home. The Doctor is shown their endings; happy normal lives.
The Doctor is being exiled to Earth, regenerating him as part of the sentence. He fades away, making strange faces, and spinning around himself. Shouting, “No!” all the while, the Doctor fades to nothing, and the final credits roll.
