Original air dates September and October 1968. The DVD Menus have a preview with something with snakes on their head, and the TARDIS flying to bits.
Enroaching lava certainly looks like shaving cream, or maybe baking soda and vinegar. They emergency jump out of lava into nowhere, which is rather dull. Zoe still wants to explore the nothing.
Jaimie and Zoe both start seeing things on the scanner. Eventually they both run out of the TARDIS, and vanish. The Doctor stays aboard and is mentally attacked. Jamie and Zoe find each other in the nothing.
They are approached by men with buckets on their heads, probably some sort of roboty thing. Both companions continue to hallucinate thier homes.
They are surrounded by the bucket men.
The Doctor is lured out into the nothing, trying to save Jaimie and Zoe. He urges them back to him. Their clothes have turned white. So has the TARDIS.
The Doctor pilots the TARDIS away. It makes funny noises and worries the Doctor. Jaimie goes to sleep until they land, and has nightmares. The TARDIS is using more power than it’s generating, and there’s a bunch of sounds.
They are under mental attack in their heads. This is when the TARDIS explodes and the companios clinging to the console, drift in nothing. The Doctor drifts away. Credits roll! Spooooky!
Jaimie and Zoe find each other in a maze of pilliars. Jaimie sees a redcoat, who he attacks and is shot by and freezes.
Zoe finds trees, and is trapped in a stone courtyard. She enters a building and falls into a pit, the door closing.
The two of them are shown on screens and commented upon as being good. Someone wants the Doctor found.
The Doctor wakes up in the pilliars, lost. He looks for Jaimie and Zoe. Different bucket men look for him. A man he doesn’t know threatens him with a gun and in several languages. Conversation shows the Doctor is treasonous for something. The man disappears. Suddenly the Doctor is surrounded by children who ask him riddles.
Doctor finds the frozen Jaimie and a safe and a wishing well. It’s a puzzle, and he has to find the way out. He gets a part of the puzzle wrong and Jaimie appears but with the wrong face.
They figure out the trees are letters that spell out proverbs.
Menacing feet track them, and they hide in the letters. The feet belong to toy soldiers.
The Master rounds them up with toy soldiers. Who bring them to more nothing. Where they’re attacked by a unicorn, and the credits.
The Doctor gets them to Disbelieve, and the unicorn freezes.
They continue through the maze of riddles. They get Jaimie’s face back and go into a house, finding a maze and a ball of twine to solve it with.
They run out of twine, and leave Jaimie at the end of the twine to find the center of the maze, where a minotaur tries to eat them until they disbelieve it too. They go back to find Jaimie and can’t. They also meet the Englishman again, and the Doctor figures out he’s Lemuel Gulliver.
The Doctor figures out they’re in a world of words and fiction. Like unicorns, minotaurs, and TARDISes.
Jaimie is chased by a tin soldier to a cliff face, which he climbs, with the help of a rope, which turns out to be Rapunzel’s hair. The castle turns out to be a high tech base thing, with a book reader in it. He finds a ticker tape machine printing out what happens to the Doctor and Zoe.
The Doctor and Zoe are meeting Medusa, and failing to disbelieve as the credits roll.
The Doctor remembers his mythology and uses his mirror to refelct Medusa. The test is over, failed.
Back in the control room, Jaimie sets off an alarm, and the bucket men start searching for him. He hides, then tries to escape.
The Doctor and Zoe find the Citadel, and are distracted by a myth from Zoes world. They fight. Zoe beats him because she knows he’s fictional. A year 2000 comic strip character from the telepress! How fun! I’ve missed him somehow. Thirty-odd years in the future, and now almost thirty years into the past…
They get a meeting with “The Master” who does not appear to be the Master of later years. He’s an author from 1926. Who writes what will happen, with a dip pen. He serves an intelligence who needs a creative force. The intelligence wants the Doctor to do it, as he will live forever.
Bucketheads trap Zoe and Jaimie, trapping them in some giant book.
The Doctor has to choose; freedom or his friends.
The Doctor runs away, and finds the master tape. He gets access to it and nearly writes himself into the story, where he would have become a fictional character. How meta.
Jaimie and Zoe are used to trap the doctor in a fake TARDIS, and he’s been captured and put into the computer directly. The Doctor keeps fighting. He frees Jaimie and Zoe, and gets them help to fight the toy soldiers and bucketmen.
The “Master” and the Doctor fling fictional characters at each other in the fight for control.
The Intelligence decides to kill the Doctor and be done with it. Jamie and Zoe push all the buttons on the computer to overload it.
The robots shoot at Zoe and Jamie, missing and hitting the computer. The Doctor unplugs the author and distracts him while the computer explodes. They are returned to reality when the computer explodes, and the TARDIS reforms for them. Credits roll, end of serial.
An extra with Basil Brush – a children’s show about a fox puppet. Basil’s cute.
