Story 042: Fury From The Deep

Original air dates March and April of 1968. Lost serial. It’s been animated, but I only have the slideshow here yet. Watching out of order, eek, so the animations can arrive on DVD.

The TARDIS lands in the ocean and they take a rowboat back in to shore. There’s big lumps of foam on the shore, which they play in. They find a gas pipeline, and the Doctor tries to open a panel to look at it. He uses a Sonic Screwdriver, an early one, to open it. They hear a noise, and are being watched.

The Doctor, Victoria, and then Jaimie are shot with some sort of beam, and left in the sand. They come to tied to chairs, and want answers. The Doctor and the others were in a restricted area, and were tampering with the pipelines. They’ve lost contact with one of their rigs and low pressure on other lines. The Doctor et al are locked up.

A woman is stopped at the gate, a Mrs Harris, and deined access to the compound.

The Doctor talks himself into a hole, knowing more than he ought.

They get a video call from one of the rigs. Everything is under control. Slight accident with two men out of action. He’s being very quiet, and will only say, “Everything’s under control.”

Jaimie escapes into the vents, and sees the scientist ask his wife for his missing file. He then escapes, just to have Victoria unlock the door with a hairpin.

Men on the rigs are restless, out of contact with base. Boss ignores this, he’s a jerk.

Victoria gets left in the bunkroom while Jaimie and the Doctor investigate and do manly things. Victoria goes elsewhere, poking around. She gets locked in. Foam starts to come in, along with seaweedy things. She cries for help, and they rush to her. She screams as the credits roll!

They rescue her in the nick of time and don’t see the horrible creature.

The scientist’s wife is now very vague and having a hard time tracking. She can’t remember. She dies? No, but it gets worse. Throbbing foamy tendril outside. She staggers to the door, sees it, runs away.

The Doctor tries to talk the boss into a little sense, but he refuses.

Two repairmen come to the scientist’s house to inspect something, but infect the stove with vines, and let the outside vines in.

The scientist comes back to his house with the Doctor, and they find the house has been filled with gas. They brek a window.

The boss continues to be a dickhead.

The impellor slows down and stops. Something must be jamming it. The scientist hears the thumping sound, but it’s blown off as pump noise.

Victoria is quite the screamer.

The chief is set upon by the tentacles.

Wife is missing, Professor goes off to find her. Doctor fears.

Wife and boss are at ocean, encrusted with seaweed. “There is little time. You know what you must do. You will obey.” Boss-man agreest, as wife walks into the ocean, over her head. Credits unexpectedly roll.

Comms is down on three of the rigs.

Victoria is tired of all the things happening and just wants to be safe and happy. Tired of crisis after crisis.

Weed shows up in the inspection pipe, and the Doctor claims the invasion has begun. The Battle of the Giants! More credits roll!

I’m too busy watching to type stuff. Excitement and adventure and helicopters!

Victoria’s screaming scares off the weed-people things. Also, luckily, the Doctor can pilot a helicopter. Tentacles that can hit a helicopter! Lusca!

Helicopter did a loop – they can’t fly upside down. Even the Doctor comments. Now they get some direction fron the other chopper pilot. Victoria is rescued.

Victoria’s screaming disturbs the creature, so the Doctor builds a sonic weapon out of her screams and the PA system. They’ll want to run them down the pipes to the nerve center and destroy that too. The weed leaves the people it had in thrall alone.

Happy endings all around. The Doctor, Jaimie, and Victoria say their goodbyes. Victoria chooses to stay with the scientist and his wife after some angsting. The TARDIS fades away without her.
