Story 016: The Chase

Original air dates May – June 1965. The preview at the end of “The Space Museum” showed the Daleks ready to pounce on the travellers, and having prepared a time machine of their very own. Things could get complicated quickly.

Oh, look. The TARDIS has a time television. So you don’t actually have to go there to see things you can just watch them happen on the monitor. They could capture the lost episodes!

These Daleks have a new word, “Annihlate” how fancy.

The natives of this planet are fit men in tights and bodysuits that have been sponge painted. They look like something a high school drama department would do if they needed underwater people. Got a closer look, finally, and they’re more complicated than that.

This Doctor really dosen’t seem to have much control over where he’s going. The TARDIS just sort of seems to run for a while and drop them somewhere.

I should have predicted the ship they appeard on was the Mary Celeste.

And now, Frankenstien’s lab, of course. And the Doctor just has to see what’s on that table. Pretty good Frankenstien’s Monster.

Whups, they’ve lost Vicki. Does she stay lost? Oh, she’s on the Dalek time machine, she doesn’t have to depend on the Doctor for a lift. The Daleks seem better at navigating.

The TARDIS can’t land in the same time and place twice? That’s news, isn’t it? I mean, exactly the same place sure, but next to itself? I guess it’s damaged so it can’t be controlled that accurately. They could fix it but it would take “months or years” – which is silly, they’re in a time machine. Take months, fix it, and then jump back where you meant to go. The Daleks chasing them aren’t that much a problem if they can’t get in the doors; let them shoot at the outside, fix it, then travel on.

And now they’ve got a Doctor Automation following them helping out. Not even a goatee to differentiate them.

And poor Vicki without a TARDIS key.

Rather deus ex machina to have a wall open and a native offer to save them. Didn’t see it coming, though!

The natives are very difficult to understand. Worse than the Daleks. Another alien race that can’t handle stairs.

So, I just realized that this is cheesy, tacky, ridiculous serial stuff, and yet I am literally sitting on the edge of my seat to find out what will happen next. I’m glad I’ve got the whole serial to watch at once instead of once weekly.

Bye, Steven! It was nice meeting you, sorry you were such an idiot. Oh wait, you survived. Good for you.

Ian and Barbara have the idea to go home. They’re going to steal the Dalek’s time machine, except the Doctor won’t help. Oh, Vicki’s convinced him, how nice. Away go the first companions, to a hopefully happy ending. I always wondered how two teachers managed to explain two years simply missing. Oh, look, they thought of that themselves. Good for them!

And the Doctor is the sad. Off he goes again, though!
