Story 011: The Rescue

Original brodcast dates from January of 1965. The Doctor, Ian and Barbara wind up on the planet Dido, where they find a shipwrecked rocket ship and a mystery.

This came off a recent blu-ray release of William Hartnell’s second season. Let’s hope they follow up with the first season and the rest of the Classic Who – there’s a bunch already out, but Troughton seems sadly missing. Too many lost episodes, I guess. We’ll see what they do with them.

Bennett is a dire fellow, crushing Vicki’s hopes. Planet Dido does not sound like a pleasant place. With what Bennett did, I can see why. Poor Vicki.

The alien speaks convienent English.

The Doctor is taking notes on an ordinary steno pad, which should look terribly out of place on the TARDIS. I did not see if he’s using a fountain pen, it was not on screen. I looked.

“A pity I didn’t get that degree, isn’t it?” may be his first reference to his own mysterious name. A very old running joke by this point, isn’t it?

And a cliffhanger! Traps with blades coming out of the wall, real vintage death trap stuff. On an alien barely inhabited planet, no less.

Ah, a year! 2493, giant rocket ships and vacuum tubes! And yet they knew nothing in 1963.

They’ve picked up another Companion, lest they run short. Does the Doctor ever run out? Nine didn’t have any when he started, but I can’t think of any other times.
